Do yoga on the cheap, support a good cause

I wanted to let everyone know about a new community class I'm teaching. The class is a flow class, loosely based in ashtanga, at Aha Yoga (in SF's Cow Hollow district, on Union at Laguna) at 7:45 on Thursday nights.

To make yoga accssible to all, the class costs only $6 for a drop-in. I challenge you to find a cheaper drop-in price in the city!

If you're willing to contribute even a little more, any amount in excess of $6 goes to an organization called Yoga Hope. Yoga Hope makes yoga available in facilities for underserved women, including women in substance abuse recovery, the poor and homeless, and victims of domestic violence. So drop in -- practice and earn karma points all at once!

SF accommodation in Sept

Hallo all,

In September, I'm going to be in SF following a TT at YogaTree - Castro studio.
I'm looking for accommodation in the Castro area (with a 6 am start, the less travelling the better!).
Since I'm coming from The Netherlands, it's quite a time and money investment and I'm hoping someone "out there" on tribe can suggest something clean, quiet and....yes....cheap.
I've been surfing the net to get an idea of what is available but maybe this post will provide the golden tip!

Thanks & cheers Rosemarie

Thoughts on Duncan Wong?

Duncan Wong is coming to SF next month. I've been thinking about taking his 4-day workshop. What he does, based on the Gaiam videos, is beautiful. I'm curious as to how he could possibly teach what he practices.

I've heard mixed reviews. One friend, who has a history of eastern Buddhism and martial arts, took his workshop last time he was here and loved it. Two new acquaintances, near strangers, told me that they took it and it was terrible -- they wanted their money back, and said people actually walked out in the middle of it.

Anyone else have experiences with him? Thoughts before I decide whether or not to invest 2 days' work and some $? Thanks.

Universal Yoga Class Pass?

Hi
I just had a nutty idea. Perhaps I'm not the first. I live in the East Bay and work in the city. Obviously there are many others in the same situation, working in one place living in the other, who like/need to practice in studios on both sides of the Bay, and perhaps even further away in N. California.

I'm curious if anyone in the Bay Area Yoga Community has considered or proposed the idea of a universal pass that can purchased and used at any studio that opts into the system. I haven't researched the administrative options or cost of such a system, but, I'm sure it could be set up.

New to this tribe & yoga-advice for starting out??

I am considering yoga as a way to release stress from my body (from difficult life events and living in the city). I've never been an athletic person...but I love dance. I've been meditating for years, done mantra and breath work, and am very intuitive.

My poor body feels very contracted and guarded. I recently walked into a yoga studio and was told about a form of yoga called yin yoga. It got my interest because it is slow. I need slow.

Does anyone have any experience with this form of yoga? Does it seem like a good place to start for someone who is new new new?

Thanks for any advice...

:-) Jeannie

know of a yoga studio in Philly?

guess this is a bit of a stretch (pun intended) but i'm hopeful that an amazing SF teacher knows of an amazing Philadelphia studio. Or even a mediocre one! I'll be in Philly for the first two weeks of January and need to get to yoga at least twice a week. Hopeful to find something in Northeast Philly or Bensalem but beggers/choosers... you know. Thanks for the recommendation!

Question: Ready for that "New Year's Resolution?"
Answer: ? (Didn't think so).

Well thanks to the "Grotto" at Sports Basement - you have a "free" chance to improve your well being ... ..

)n 01 December 2007, Sports Basement joined together with local yoga teachers to give a yoga gift to the community.
Next yoga class:

• Sunday, 30 December 2007 - 10:30 - 12:00 noon. -
• Yoga Flow - with Annie Leguennec
• http://www.sfgoju.com/

• Sports Basement --San Francisco
• 1590 Bryant St.
San Francisco, CA
(415) 575-3000
http://sportsbasement.com

And due to the very high turnout of yoga students, speed walkers, coach potatoes, Fat Tire Beer Specialist, snowboarders, and then some . . . Starting January 2008, Sports Basement will host free yoga classes each & every Sunday from 1:00 - 2:30pm.

Yoga Teachers of various styles (Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, Raja Yoga, Kundalini, Anasara Yoga, Yin Yoga, Power Yoga, Anna Forrest Yoga, etc.) will present their unique connection with the yogic path.

Check back each month and see who’s in the mix – free yoga classes by yoga teachers of all walks of life. Official Website: http://ynottony.com/yoga1.htm

And, if you are a yoga teacher (or a soon to graduate yoga teacher) looking to share your knowledge, practice karma yoga (community service), and put yourself in the public eye, come join in & volunteer your services making yoga affordable for every individual. Pick one Sunday per month . . Teach as many months as you would enjoy doing. . . .

Yoga teachers will receive a $25.00 gift certificate from Sports Basement (per yoga class) & can use the platform as a way of promoting themselves and their unique yoga experience.

Regardless, it's a grand opportunity to start the year on the right path, meet some like minded individuals, see life in a different light, & calm the mind.

* Yoga teachers of all schools of yoga are invited to teach.
* Yoga students of all levels are invited to attend.

For more information or to get your name on the yoga teacher's list - contact: Iyengar Yoga Teacher, tony at:: http://ynottony.com/contact.php

1. Send a brief Yoga Bio
2. Send a list of your available Sundays in January, February & March - 2008.
3. Send a link to your website, personal profile (Myspace, Zaadz, Tribe, Yelp review, etc) or something which speaks highly of you
4. Start advertising your yoga class

Wishing the best of all possible worlds,
tony

My friends and I, Swiss, American, Nepalese have 5,000 acres in Fiji and 500 acres freehold on an exotic island not far from Suva, Fiji plus a 50 foot motor sailer and we are discussing establishing a Tantra focused colony/commune/resort there. Any interest or suggestions?

Camp in Tuva

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

Thank you

hi,
This prob. isn’t the most appropriate place to post this...but I thought I'd give it a try.
I have two herniated disks in my back L4/L5 due to a MVA two year ago. Recently, about two weeks ago got a cortizone epidural to reduce swelling and inflammation. Unfortunately the doctor put the needle in too far and caused me to leak spinal fluid and I had to stay in bed for 5 days b/c my head hurt so bad. It will be two weeks on this Wednesday.

I'm still very sore and have been applying heat and taking vicodin ( only when it's unbearable). My question is, do you know when it is safe to start stretching again? Can you recommend any stretches? I do not want to strain anything and cause further pain and discomfort.

Thanks!

If you have experienced their classes etc... I would most appreciate hearing your feedback...

Yoga Teacher Wanted

Hello Yogis,

Omine Yoga Dojo in San Bruno is looking for a yoga teacher to fill a Thursday evening slot, 5:15-6:30pm. It's a beginner-level1 class. This is a great group of students. How do I know? I teach the class. However, for personal reasons, I'm unable to continue the class and the students are so driven to excel in their practice.
this is a wonderful studio which also has karate classes. The yoga room is spacious, lots of natural light, gets fresh air and has yoga props. It's a paid position and the teacher would get a flat rate.

If you have any questions and/or interested, please email me through my profile. also, you can check out Omine's website: www.ominekaratedojo.com.

Thanks and namaste,
-Liz

Ashram shopping

I've reached a point at which I think it's time for me to make my first ashram trip. I want the opportunity to get off the grid, build a meditation practice, put some greater purpose back into my yoga postures, cleanse the toxins without needing to think about it so hard, and chant my heart out. Essentially, I want to immerse myself 24/7 in a yoga experience, if only for a little while.

Problem is, I don't have any idea where to go. I don't have a specific guru whose teachings I closely follow. I don't want to book someplace in India online just on the silly assumption that hey, it's in India, so it must be good.

Can anyone recommend someplace they've gone or offer other suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks,
L.

Moon Phases & Yoga

I'm wondering how various different moon phases affect our practice? I have a deep feeling that we're affected by moon cycles more than many of us are aware. I have noticed that when the moon is waning, so does my energy. I sleep most when there isn't any light from the moon and it doesn't have a thing to do with how much light comes into my room. I'm just energy-less. My time is spent sleeping or doing things that do not require strenuous physical activity.

Whenever I try to muscle my way through a run or any type of activity that requires much physical energy I usually suffer for it in some way. This is not the case while the moon is waxing. My energy is lifted and grows, almost with the moon. Nor do I don't sleep much when the moon is growing. Almost every full moon I have trouble sleeping. This lasts a few days before the full moon to a few days after at which point my energy drops with the shrinking moon. What's your experience been with moon phases and your energy levels?

My question here is that I've experienced people who say you shouldn't practice Yoga during a full moon though I would say quite the opposite based off my experience. I actually feel MUCH more open to recieving good energy and I also feel it's easier to "reach out" to other energy that I usually have trouble feeling. I wonder if the ancient texts spoke predominantly about Yogis being men and if this is true for the male gender but the opposite for the female? Since the moon is feminine, it makes sense?

What say you?
Ashtanga in SF?

My beloved SF Ashtanga can be frustrating. . . among other things, the website isn't updated regularly, so I've now found a "closed" sign on the door twice in the past few weeks. Tonight may have been the last straw, because I looked at the posted schedule and current (?) list of instructors and saw there was one name that had been whited out *and* I didn't see my favorite instructor's name (Rebecca) listed. HUH!?!?

So... anyone have any other recommendations? I've taken two Ashtanga classes at Yoga Studio (one w/Franco and the other with Catherine). Both classes were good, but they didn't appeal enough for me to end my search and start paying $20 a class to continue there. I gather green path is closed :( Also, perhaps some of you more experienced yogis could suggest another style of yoga that is similar to Ashtanga?

Thanks, Eileen

P.S. Rebecca... if you're no longer at SF Ashtanga, please send me a message!

Message in a Bottle - urgent message from Earth

Here's what I just sent to Yoga Tree. Please feel free to send this to any other yoga studio that sells unnecessary bottled water.

As a current yogi at your studios, I would like to you read the following and reconsider your bottled water purchases. I always fill my own plastic water bottle from the water cooler, and I am sure other yogis would be more than content using this source of water if there were no bottled water to buy.

Here are some crucial facts:

-- Americans consume one billion bottles of water a week.

-- Americans spent more money last year on bottled water than on Ipods or movie tickets ($15 Billion)

-- 24% of the bottled water we buy is tap water that has been repackaged and resold by Coke (Dasani) and Pepsi (Aquafina).

-- Fiji water may come from "one of the last pristine ecosystems on Earth," but out in the back of the bottling plant in Fiji is a haze of diesel pollution caused by the plant's dedicated generators that are required to provide the plant with its 24-hour electricity needs, power reliability which is not available to the local population. Meanwhile, unreliable local water service caused a typhus epidemic last year.

-- Americans toss 38 billion plastic (PET) water bottles into landfills each year. Our recycling rate for PET plastics is only 23%.

-- one billion people, and 3,000 children die daily around the world from tainted water.

For more information, please read this eye-opening article "Message in a Bottle":

How to learn Sanskrit?

I'm toying with the idea of trying to learn a little Sanskrit. I want to know more than the names of some asanas and the meanings of a few chants that I picked up in yoga teacher training, but don't need to study it in-depth and have no desire to become and expert and translate ancient texts.

I'm considering buying Sanskrit for Yogis ($245 workbook and CD program), but don't know anyone who's used it and wonder how good it is. The only other route I can think of is taking a beginning Sanskrit course at a university, but there aren't that many around and they'd pose a scheduling nightmare.

Anyone have thoughts or suggestions?

I work for lululemon and July 1st we are planning an event with Yogastudio to do sun salutations across the Golden Gate Bridge for a half an hour starting at 1pm.

Its a charity event we're doing to raise money for green yoga, we'll donate $5 for every person that shows up.

Also, I think it's pretty f-ing cool considering nothing like this has ever been done before on the bridge and it's not being advertised. It's totally word of mouth! Hope to see you all there!

Namaste

Mark.

Small prereg beginner classes in SF?

I learned a bit from an earlier thread, but I'm looking specifically for a smaller class. I can't afford private instruction but would be more comfortable in a smaller group and willing to pay more for it. I've never done any yoga and am very inflexible, especially for a healthy massage therapist ;)

I'm feeling drawn to Hatha and Kundalini but willing to start with anything but Bikram. Thanks for any pointers.

I've been playing the same handful of CD's over and over while practicing and teaching. I need some new material. Something modern (I have to be in a very particular mood to enjoy listening to others chanting), not too sleepy (I'm an ashtangi; gotta keep those energy levels high for at least the first 45 minutes), but also not too distracting.

Suggestions?

Kirtan at One Taste Sunday April 8

Hello All,
I will be doing a benefit Kirtan at One Space SF on Sunday April 8th from 7:30-9PM. This is the first in a series of such benefit Kirtans being done by me at One Taste. Joining me is Julia Milin, a professional Opera singer and Yogini as well as other musicians.

Here is their website:
http://www.onetastesf.com/
One Taste is located at Folsom street between 6th and 7th Streets.

There is a 5-10 admission fee, but no one is turned away due to a lack of funds.

1/2 of all proceeds goes to Amma's Charities.

Who is Amma? She is an Indian Spiritual leader. Her organization committed $22 million to the Tsunami.
http://amritapuri.org is her website

Kirtan is High Spirited devotional group singing. Timeless, Uplifting, Powerful and great FUN! Kirtan has become quite popular as artists such as Krishna Das, Bhagwan Das and Jai Uttal regularly tour. In Kirtan the sacred, sublime mantras of ancient India are sung to beautiful melodies, in their native language, Sanskrit.

See you sunday,
Sadasiva

I am not in SF yet, but I planning to move to the bay area within the next six months. I would like to find a teacher training school, but not just any school. I have been looking on-line, but is so hard to get a feel where the good energy is through the internet. I am interest most in kundalini yoga, as well as kirpala, hatha, and iyengar yoga. I will be visiting the area over the holidays and I would like to have a good place to start looking. I not sure that I want to like in the heart of the city, so I have been searching areas to the north in marin county. If anyone has and guidance, suggestion, or possible connections I could make, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Sad after practice???

I'm new to yoga, been practicing only since November.
I have been consistently going four times a week though and already see positive results.
I really do enjoy it. If I miss a class I can feel it right away.

-but-

More often than not I end class in a sad mood. Introspective. I find myself hugging my knees and holding myself for a while before putting my props away. Once or twice I have even cried.

Many people seem to leave class invigorated, energized. I don't seem to get that result... yet.

It's not really a bad sad, because I definitely keep wanting to continue. I also seem to have a knack for it. My teachers all compliment me and I am learning and growing very quickly.

But this sadness...

Has anyone else experienced this?
Yoga teachers interested in bartering yoga teacher training for bodywork in SF East Bay?

Hi all SF Yoga Tribe members. I hope this type of posting is suitable to post in this area? If not, let me know and Ill delete it and post in listings section. Just seems the listings section may be a bit ignored in some tribes.?

I am interested in bartering my services as a Certified Massage Therapist and Yiquan & Tai Chi Qigong practitioner, with a yoga instructor for on-going yoga classes for yoga teacher training & certification, in the SF East Bay.
Preferably somewhere near Berkeley, Oakland, Albany areas as I live in this area.

I prefer a slower paced practice where postures are held for a while to sink more deeply into, integrating a meditative approach. I'm not interested in the "hot yoga", talkative or speedy yoga class styles so much.
And I'm not looking for a "master" or guru, other than my own inner being - which i already am and am exploring.
I used to practice yoga ( mostly Hatha & Vinyasa ) regularly for between @ 1993 - 98.

My main practice is Yiquan, Wuji & Tai Chi Qigong, which i have been practicing since 1989. And would like to exchange on-site bodywork sessions for on-going classes with a compatible style and practitioner / instructor in the East Bay. I live near Berkeley, so a studio / school close to Berkeley would be best.

If you are interested in this sort of exchange, contact me describing your specific experience, yoga training & "style", where you teach, times of classes, any questions, etc..

Below is a copy of a posting for my bodywork practice -

Professional, relaxing & therapeutic bodywork brought to you in the convenience & comfort of your own location. I bring my own chair or table, music (if requested) & heartful skill to offices / workplaces, events and homes within the San Francisco Bay area, including Marin & the East Bay.

Modalities I am trained & certified in include -

Swedish Massage

Deep Tissue Massage

Reflexology Massage

Thai Massage

Shiatsu Massage

On-Site Chair Massage
Reiki

Pranic Healing.

I am also a Wuji & Tai-Chi Qigong & Yiquan practitioner since 1989, which I offer excercises and classes in as a self-care supplement to bodywork.

I offer on-site / outcall sessions in the convenience & comfort of your own home, event or business location. ( No hotel, motel sessions. )
I am available for on-site sessions in the East Bay, Marin and San Francisco.

I have provided on-site massage for -

* The 4th Annual Yoga Journal Conference, January 18-21, 2007 at Hyatt Regency Embarcadero in San Francisco.

"We spend a third of our life sleeping. No matter what we do, however virtuous or non-virtuous our activities, whether we are murderers or saints, monks or ibertines, every day ends the same. We shut our eyes and dissolve into darkness,. We do so fearlessly, even as everything we know as "me" disappears. After a brief period, images arise and our sense of self arises with them. We exist again in the apparently limitless world of dream. Every night we participate in these most profound mysteries, moving from one dimension of experience to another, losing our sense of self and finding it again, and yet we take it all for granted. We wake in the morning and continue in "real" life, but in a sense we are still asleep and dreaming. The teachings tell us tha twe can continue in this deluded, dreamy state, day and night, or wake up to the truth."

If we cannot carry our practice into sleep, if we lose ourselves every night, what chance do we have to be aware when death comes? Look to your experience in dreams to know how you will fare in death. Look to your experience in sleep to discover whether or not you are truly awake.

In order to fully travel the path to enlightenment, all of life must be recognized and engaged as spiritual opportunity. Tibetan yoga has, from ancient times to the present, used the dream and sleep states both as aides to the path and as complete paths in themselves. During this teaching, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche will explain the dream yoga and give instruction and transmission for its practice.

Dream yoga is not only a practice to be done in the dream state. Its understanding and methods work with all moments of life, waking and sleeping. Preliminary practices are engaged to bring greater awareness to each moment and to turn the practitioner's mind from engagement in dualistic preoccupations to integration with the boundless view of the non-dual path. Concentration practice steadies the mind, and yogic practices done during waking periods in the night carry awareness into the sleep state. Eventually the practitioner develops the capacity for lucid dreaming--knowing during the dream that one is in a dream. Once lucidity is stabilized, the dream state is used for tantric practice, for healing, for the development of insight, and finally for the direct penetration into the truth that underlies both the dreams of night and the dream of our waking life.

The focus of dream yoga is integrating with the clear light state of our natural mind. By following precise instructions, the practitioner develops awareness of the onset or presence of dreams; having recognized the dream experience as a dream, the advanced practitioner is able to experience its nature with clear non-conceptual awareness. For less advanced practitioners, becoming lucid in the dream allows one to work with the various manifestations--one can overcome fears, perform actions normally beyond one's capacity, and gradually increase dreams of clarity. In this system, ordinary dreams are understood to be caused by habitual propensities ssociated with previous actions and experiences conjoined with the energy of the mind. Eventually these emotional dreams can be transformed, liberated, or brought to the path by the accomplished practitioner.

Tenzin Rinpoche will talk about the practice of dream yoga both from the point of view expressed in the text as well as from his own unique experiences.

Tri-yoga teachers/yogis?

I'm looking for teachers or centers or students of Tri-yoga in the Bay area. I was fortunate enough to start my yoga practice with a wonderful tri-yoga teacher on the east coast but I am having trouble finding people that practice tri-yoga here. Any leads would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

A Tantric Perspective - Everything is Lakshmi

A Tantric Perspective - Everything is Lakshmi

I have been deeply studying yoga and the have become enraptured with the beauty therein. From the plentiful poses to the myriads of miracurlous mantras to the liberating experiences of the scriptures.

The glorious yogis have given us the truth. Everything is one vibration, which is Om.

From Om comes Shiva and Shakti. Shiva is seen as everything, and in the case of Shiva and Shakti, Shiva is the physical world, and Shakti is what moves it. A simple example is a boat is shiva, and the wind that moves it is shakti. Or your mind is shiva, and your thoughts are shakti.

But, as we see in the world of classical science (you know microscopes, mathematical formulas, etc.), which is just as much yoga as the ascthetic meditating in the cave, when we break down the physical beyond atoms, quarks, etc. we see that it is all moving. We only experience stillness because of movement. The floor you are on is solid because it is moving in one fashion and you are moving in another.

This is the experience of shakti. The infinite shoreless ocean of conciousness is called "Chitta", which you could also call Lakshmi. Chitta, in her infinite creativity, attains the entire universe for the pleasure of playing with herself and re-recognizing herself after hiding from herself. A cosmic game of hide and go seek, if you will. This means that everything we experience is really the entire infinite conciousness playing her game. We are this blissful conciousness, indeed she has CHOSEN to be you, so that she may experience herself.

The only way to experience yourself is to experience not yourself. The only way to know that you are you and not me is for you to see you and then see me. We appear different, but there is great joy in experiencing our oneness when we come together and join hands, or dance or sing the same song.

So this is what Chitta has done, she's some infinitely powerful, she wants to delight in her own creation, so she hides herself from herself as us and then unfolds herself back into herself.

That sounds great, what does it mean?

1) We are desire. A lof of yoga seeks to rid ourselves of desires, attachments, thoughts, etc. But, we are desire. Chitta has desired us into being, and in fact everything that we desire is her desire. There can be nothing else! Beyond the whole universe has desired to be us and every thought we have is a reflection of that infinite shakti. We need only be careful that following our desires bring us into a greater relationship with Chitta, because sometimes she desires to hide herself even more. But eventually she can only love herself.

2) Nothing is seperate from us. The scriptures state that the most terrible form of Lord Shiva, known as Rudra, the destroyer, gets his shakti, his power, from Lakshmi, the most beautiful, abundant, smiling, genorous and glorious form of the goddess you can imagine. She love us so much that she will let us reject her blessings.

There is great power in the experience that nothing is seperate from us, and everything is a manifestation of Lakshmi or Chitta. Take the most macho, annoying person you know. If they are moving, they are shakti, if they are breathing, they are shakti, whatever you see is shakti.

And so are you!

So, if you want to have an effect on the annoying people in your life, the first thing you must do is to experience them as nothing else than another facet of yourself. If you seperate yourself and say, "I am good, that person is bad, I am not that person." You lose all your power to affect them. You build a wall, and that's violent.

If you see them as nothing other than the form of the shakti, twisted up in some wierd shape, or covered up like a glove on your own hand, there is some communication that goes on between you. There are no walls. When there are no walls, love can conquer fear.

This is the key to humanity's survival. When we are in a situation with someone we don't like, we can not seperate ourselves from them, and feel that we are not them because they appear so different from us. We must instead pull them into us. When someone hurts you, it is as if they are a cut on your pinky finger. If you build a wall and try to seperate yourself from your finger, it will hurt more than if you show greater love. Love is stronger than fear, if it wasn't there wouldn't be a universe anyhow because nothing would hold it together.

When someone makes you angry, picture the person in your mind. Then you feel the anger, then just feel the anger. You are making the anger yourself, it doesn't exist anywhere else, not in the person or the relationship, just in you. So experience this anger, let it do it's thing, but do not act on it. It will not last forever. Eventually it will dissipate into pure energy and then you can ask yourself, "How do I show love in the face of something that I don't like?"

My teacher Douglas Brooks brings the core teachings of non-dual tantric philosophy into what he calls the triatic heart. There is you and there is me. An apparent duality, seperateness. The triatic heart then looks at this as:
1) I am you. This means I am everything, including you and myself.
2) I am nothing but you. This means that I am only you, indeed you are yourself.
3) I am not you. This means that I am only me.
These 3 "rules", or observations rather, exist BECAUSE of eachother, not instead of eachother. They actually support eachother. If you can grasp this, you can begin to feel what non dual tantric philosophy is all about. And it is a feeling, more than a conceptualization.

---

So that's the "what", now here's the "how":

Keep breathing into your heart. Everything is there. Every great teacher, every ashram or holy place, even the power of the stars themselves is accesible through your heart, right here, right now.

It's all just a bunch of shakti playing with itself anyhow...

lookin for the Black Folk

hello beautiful yogis !!

i'm looking for folks of African descent who are practicing yoga in the Bay Area... anyone out there?

but why, you ask?

i've been at my practice for a couple of years now, and have a particular challenge around getting my tailbone to drop. it occurred to me that other folks who have a little "junk in their trunk" might have come up against the same issue. while i understand that a lot of folks in the world have to consciously get their chest to lift and to untuck their buttbones, most black folks i've known would have the opposite going on, with a more significant curve to the lower back and a more sizable backside.

so it's like that, y'know?

also, i've so rarely seen black people in my yoga classes, i really wonder if they're just completely missing out on the goodness...

reply in the tribe, or drop me a note.........

His yoga class can be both physically and mentally challenging, yet remains beginner friendly. By using vinyasa (roughly sun salutations) as yoga's physical building block, we can realize the breath as the building block of consciousness. Yoga as meditation allows us to experience life's honesty by transcending perceived limitations, building in organic ways an appreciation of love, patience, generosity, and union. Both seated meditation and chanting are used as part of the experience.

See you soon!

Cave Of The Yellow Dog

CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG

A Mongolian nomad family find themselves in disagreement when the oldest daughter, Nansal, finds a dog and brings it home. Believing that it is responsible for attacking his sheep, her father refuses to allow her to keep it. When it’s time for the family to move on, Nansal must decide whether to defy her father and take her new friend with them. Oscar-nominated director Byambasuren’s follow up to the hugely successful THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL is a thought provoking mix of documentary and drama that tells the story of the age-old bond between man and dog, a bond which experiences a new twist through the eternal cycle of reincarnation in Mongolia.

*abundant, free & secure on-site parking
*large selection of flowers, concentrates, clones, edibles

*beautiful waterfront location, close to parks and restaurants

*fully secure facility

*free holistic health care clinic

Contact:

Web: harborsidehealthcenter.com

Phone: 510- 533-0147

Address: 1840 Embarcadero, Oakland CA 94606

some patient reviews:

just got back from harborside, this place has huge potential. The staff here are excellent. They are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and clearly qualified for their respective positions. Their opening day selection may leave something to be desired but the intensive care grand daddy is top notch and some of the others look pretty decent as well. This is a patient and caregiver collective, they do not force you to designate them as your caregiver in the way many other clubs do. These people are on the up and up, and are clearly trying to provide safe access to medicine for patients while also providing services above and beyond the call of duty. I'd say this place reminds me of BPG, just a lot more classy and a lot less hippy-style(not meant to be derogatory to hippies.

this club is a keeper, folks... the space is clean & bright, with tons of natural light coming in from the windows (yes, you can see in from outside). and the staff is as friendly & professional as they come, too. at this point they've got edibles, extracts, a few clones (jack flash, the odious HMW skunk & a couple others) and a decent though small selection of herbs (a little outdoor, some purples & a few other odds 'n ends). they're striving to have over thirty different varieties to choose from-- a noble goal if there ever was one.

go check this place out & give them the business... they deserve it!

as for harborside - oh my gawd! makes the BPG look like a soup kitchen. We stopped by because we'd heard that they were opening this month and were curious to see the space. We got a little preview (lucked into someone working on the space who gave us a mini tour) and can't wait - this is the club Oakland has been waiting for! Classy, classy, classy. Great BIG space with lots of room in the dispensory and seperate rooms for classes, massage, counseling, etc. If the herb lives up to the space I may just park my car in their big 'ole lot and move into it.

I was able to visit the ultra clean, brand new facility @ Harborsie health center 1840 embarcadero in oakland and I was highly impressed. Upon entrance I was greeted in with a handshake and after being properly checked by security I was instructed into there oreintation room. It was a painless verification process and although I had ocbc my compadre had medicann and his sf card and was able to get verification painless as well. The staff was courteous and they seemed like they were eager to get to helping me.

Med selection:

About 15 different varieties (could be more)

8ths range from $50-60 donation and they have some great concentrates as well. I purchased some Intensive care granddady Purple that was topnotch both in curing and effect. The jarred meds they sell are all sealed and weigh 3.5 grams (checked on my scale at home)

They also had some killer sour deisel best i'd seen in a long time for 55 and some odd 5 purple strains,

For patients on a budget they had purple budlets wich were the same purple nugs they had just smaller for 30$ quite a deal if you ask me..

and for you edible fans they had the standard butter bros products and a couple extras Im sure once they get going they will have a lot more..

Overall Vibe:

Im glad they gave these people the permits to operate this faciltiy because they seem really decdicated to helping patients they have such a huge facility with holistic massage rooms, really nice clean bathrooms and the best part is that the counters. the counters are sort of magnified i guess in wich the buds are very visible and sit on nice glass plates wich are very visible unlike some places where you gotta bend down and get on your knees to look at whats in the bottom of the case.. The place really gives off a more medical vibe than most places and they had a kinda spiritual vibe that i dug in there..

overall Im glad that this place is the feauture of oaksterdamm and I know once the secret gets out this place will be flooded with business..

bottom line:

If your in oakland this is the place..easy freeway acess, good staff and most importantly good meds..

Yoga is a philosophy, practice, and tradition of liberation - liberation from the limitations created in the mind. Our true, natural, and inborn state is one of clarity, happiness, love, and compassion. With yogic practice, we become acquainted and intimate with ourselves. Yoga is a challenging inquiry and a heartwarming adventure!
Kate's teaching style combines keen and committed attention to healthy postural alignment along with light-hearted kindness. She utilizes toning and mantra recitation as a tool for harmonizing body, mind, and breath. Kate finds great joy in exploring connection and community through yoga, music, movement, and study.
