I've reached a point at which I think it's time for me to make my first ashram trip. I want the opportunity to get off the grid, build a meditation practice, put some greater purpose back into my yoga postures, cleanse the toxins without needing to think about it so hard, and chant my heart out. Essentially, I want to immerse myself 24/7 in a yoga experience, if only for a little while.
Problem is, I don't have any idea where to go. I don't have a specific guru whose teachings I closely follow. I don't want to book someplace in India online just on the silly assumption that hey, it's in India, so it must be good.
Can anyone recommend someplace they've gone or offer other suggestions/recommendations?
Thanks,
L.

Re: Ashram shopping
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 11:53 PMA great start is any Sivananda ashram, they have on in SF but the ones in India are the sleep over kind. They are no non-sense places; North India is you want to go now (summer) and south India for our Winter (Oct-March).

I have been to the south India ashram and really had a great time.

Re: Ashram shopping
Mon, July 23, 2007 - 3:55 PMI know where I'd go: www.amritapuri.org/ashram/directs.php
Amritapuri is the main Ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi, the "hugging saint" of Kerala.

Re: Ashram shopping
Tue, July 24, 2007 - 9:17 AMsounds like you might want to do a retreat rather than necessarily an ashram stay? Do you want to go to a lineage style place/guru style yoga ashram or do you want a more general retreat style experience? I ask this because of the part of your sentence that says, if only for a little while.
Some great local options for retreat style work (and ashrams hay!).
