Here's what I just sent to Yoga Tree. Please feel free to send this to any other yoga studio that sells unnecessary bottled water.
As a current yogi at your studios, I would like to you read the following and reconsider your bottled water purchases. I always fill my own plastic water bottle from the water cooler, and I am sure other yogis would be more than content using this source of water if there were no bottled water to buy.
Here are some crucial facts:
-- Americans consume one billion bottles of water a week.
-- Americans spent more money last year on bottled water than on Ipods or movie tickets ($15 Billion)
-- 24% of the bottled water we buy is tap water that has been repackaged and resold by Coke (Dasani) and Pepsi (Aquafina).
-- Fiji water may come from "one of the last pristine ecosystems on Earth," but out in the back of the bottling plant in Fiji is a haze of diesel pollution caused by the plant's dedicated generators that are required to provide the plant with its 24-hour electricity needs, power reliability which is not available to the local population. Meanwhile, unreliable local water service caused a typhus epidemic last year.
-- Americans toss 38 billion plastic (PET) water bottles into landfills each year. Our recycling rate for PET plastics is only 23%.
-- one billion people, and 3,000 children die daily around the world from tainted water.

Re: Message in a Bottle - urgent message from Earth
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 12:05 PMGreat post Craig,
I was going to mention that you suggest Yoga Tree join the Green Yoga Association ( www.greenyoga.org/index.html ). The Yoga Loft, which is where I go, is a member & they don't sell water. But, then I checked and found out that Yoga Tree is listed as a member of the Green Yoga Association and there's nothing in their checklist ( www.greenyoga.org/greenstudios.html ) about water in PET bottles. There probably should be.

Re: Message in a Bottle - urgent message from Earth
Sun, July 15, 2007 - 2:03 AMWell since you put it that way... I think I'll be putting the bottle down now : ) I wanted to mention thought that re-filling cheap plastic water bottles that have been open longer than 8 hours is toxic to your body so PLEASE invest in a canteen or specialized plastic that DOES NOT degrade into the water you are drinking. Companies make bottles that will not degrade up to a certain heat, which is perfect for everyday water useage.
Happy (and GREEN) Drinking!
Katrina
