I am considering yoga as a way to release stress from my body (from difficult life events and living in the city). I've never been an athletic person...but I love dance. I've been meditating for years, done mantra and breath work, and am very intuitive.
My poor body feels very contracted and guarded. I recently walked into a yoga studio and was told about a form of yoga called yin yoga. It got my interest because it is slow. I need slow.
Does anyone have any experience with this form of yoga? Does it seem like a good place to start for someone who is new new new?
Thanks for any advice...
:-) Jeannie

Re: New to this tribe & yoga-advice for starting out??
Thu, January 24, 2008 - 3:45 PMi have a good friend who does yin yoga~
i think Dina Amsterdam teaches yin yoga workshops sometimes, and she probably uses it in her regular class as well, but not sure.
i personally practice jivamukti a lot for this reason, but it is not the same` it also depends on the teacher when it comes to how fast it is.
recently i did a couple of chakra tuning through jivamukti yoga workshops that were phenominal~
have you tried anusara?

Fri, February 1, 2008 - 12:39 PMDear Jeannie, I think this form of yoga is extremely good for someone who is beginning yoga because it gently helps your body grow supple and improves the circulation of energy in the body. The slow practice also helps you go inward to yourself to develop patience and inner quiet.

Fri, February 1, 2008 - 8:38 PMEveryone is different, head for your local studio ( I think there are one or two in SF) and try some different styles. See what feels best to you.
